Stop Screenshotting Excel: How to Build Agile Burndown Charts directly in Google Slides

Let’s be honest about your Sprint Review preparation.
It usually goes like this: You open Jira, Asana, or a massive Excel sheet. You stare at the sprint data. You take a screenshot of the burndown chart. You paste it into Google Slides. Then, five minutes before the meeting, you realize the "Remaining Effort" for Day 8 was wrong.
Now you’re scrambling. You have to go back to the source, fix the data, take a new screenshot, crop it, and re-paste it.
It’s a workflow from 2010.
Agile is supposed to be fast and iterative. Your reporting should be too. Today, I’m going to show you how to build a crisp, native Burndown Chart directly inside Google Slides using ExtraChart. No screenshots, no blurry JPEGs, and completely editable on the fly.
Why Native Google Charts Struggle with Burndowns
Google Slides has native charts, sure. But they rely heavily on linking to external Google Sheets. If you’ve ever tried to manage a "Linked Object" during a presentation when permissions aren't set right, you know the panic.
Plus, standard charts often lack the specific styling flexibility needed for a good burndown—like distinguishing clearly between the "Ideal Trend" (the plan) and the "Actual Remaining" (reality) without wrestling with deep settings menus.
The Better Way: Using ExtraChart
ExtraChart runs as a sidebar right inside your presentation. This means you type your data into the sidebar, and the chart updates on the slide.
For a Burndown Chart, we specifically want to use a Multi-Series Line Chart. This allows us to plot two distinct lines against the same timeline (Sprint Days).

Step 1: Fire Up the Sidebar
Open your presentation and go to Extensions -> ExtraChart -> Create & Edit Charts.
Step 2: Choose Your Weapon
In the sidebar, scroll down to the Line & Area Charts section. You want the Multi-Line Chart (as seen in the image above). This is crucial because a burndown chart is effectively comparing two stories:
- The Ideal Path: A straight line from total story points to zero.
- The Actual Path: The jagged, realistic line of what your team actually crushed.
Step 3: Input Your Sprint Data
Once the editor pops up, you’ll see the Data tab. It looks just like a mini-spreadsheet. You can copy-paste your data directly from Excel or CSVs here.
For a standard 2-week sprint, your columns should look something like this:

As you type, the chart preview updates instantly. No "Apply" button, no waiting.
Step 4: Style for Impact
This is where ExtraChart shines over native tools. Switch to the Settings tab.
- Customize the Lines: Make your "Ideal Trend" a neutral color (like gray) and perhaps thinner. Make your "Actual Remaining" line bold and a primary color (like Blue or Red) so it pops.
- Gridlines: Adjust the axes so your "0" baseline is clear.
- Legend: Position the legend at the top so stakeholders know immediately what they are looking at.
Step 5: Insert and Iterate
Click "Create," and a high-resolution chart lands on your slide.
Here is the best part: The chart is not dead pixels.
If your Product Owner says, "Actually, we closed that 5-point story on Day 4, not Day 5," you don't need to open Excel. Just click the chart, open the ExtraChart sidebar, and change the number. The chart updates instantly.
