How to Create a Tornado Chart in Google Slides for Sensitivity Analysis

If you work in project management, finance, or engineering, you know the drill. You’ve run a sensitivity analysis, you have your "High" and "Low" estimates for various risks, and now you need to present them.

You need a Tornado Chart.

The problem? Google Slides (and even Google Sheets) doesn't have a "Tornado Chart" button. To build one natively, you usually have to perform a dark ritual involving stacked bar charts, hidden helper series, and manually calculating offsets in a spreadsheet. It’s tedious, and if your data changes, the whole house of cards collapses.

What is a Tornado Chart?

Before we build it, let's clarify what we are looking at. A Tornado chart is essentially a specific type of bar chart used to compare the relative importance of variables.

It looks like a funnel or a tornado (hence the name), with the widest bars at the top representing the variables with the biggest impact on your outcome, tapering down to the least impactful variables at the bottom.

In a standard sensitivity analysis:

  • The Vertical Axis lists the variables (e.g., "Material Cost," "Labor Rates," "Exchange Rate").
  • The Horizontal Axis represents the value of the outcome (e.g., Net Present Value).
  • The Bars extend left (Low Estimate) and right (High Estimate) from a base case.

The "Native" Google Slides Headache

If you try to do this with the native "Insert Chart" feature in Slides, you are forced to open a linked Google Sheet. You then have to enter negative values for your "Low" estimates to make the bars go left.

But standard bar charts often mess up the labels when bars go negative, or the axis labels end up crossing right through your data. You end up spending 45 minutes tweaking axis settings just to get a chart that breaks the moment you update a single number.

Step 3: Structuring Your Data

Once the popup editor opens, you’ll see the Data tab. This is where the magic happens. You don't need a complex formula; you just need to structure your data logic correctly.

To get that "Left vs Right" look:

  1. Column A (Labels): Enter your risk variables (e.g., "Market Demand", "Production Cost"). Pro Tip: Sort these manually in the editor so the item with the widest range is at the top.
  2. Column B (Low/Negative): Enter your downside impact. Crucial: Enter these as negative numbers (e.g., -5000, -3000).
  3. Column C (High/Positive): Enter your upside impact as positive numbers (e.g., 6000, 2500).

As you type, the Real-Time Preview on the left will immediately show the bars extending in opposite directions from the center (zero) line.

Step 4: Customization (The "Tornado" Look)

Now switch to the Settings tab to polish the visual.

  • Colors: By default, ExtraChart might assign random colors. Use the Color Palette Manager to set the "Low" series to a muted red (risk) and the "High" series to a muted green or blue (opportunity).
  • Axes & Labels: Ensure your gridlines are subtle. You can adjust the Inner Radius or bar spacing (padding) to make the bars thicker, giving it that substantial, professional look.
  • Legend: Since a Tornado chart usually implies "Low vs High," you can often toggle the legend off to save space, or move it to the bottom.

Step 5: Insert and Present

Click Create. The chart is inserted as a pixel-perfect image on your slide.

Updating Your Analysis
