How to Create a Slope Chart in Google Slides to Visualize 'Before vs. After' Trends

Here is how to do it properly.
What Exactly is a Slope Chart?
Think of a slope chart as a line chart that has gone on a diet. It typically has only two points on the X-axis (e.g., "2024" and "2025").
Lines connect these two points for each category you are tracking.
- Upward slope: Improvement/Growth.
- Downward slope: Decline.
- Flat line: No change.
It is arguably the best visualization tool for ranking changes or "Before vs. After" comparisons.
The Problem with the Native Method
Can you hack this using native Google Slides charts? Sort of. You can insert a standard Line Chart, strip away all the gridlines, delete the Y-axis numbers, and manually try to force the data points to the edges.
But here is the headache:
- Labeling is a nightmare. Native charts hate putting labels directly next to the line ends (which is crucial for slope charts). You usually end up adding text boxes manually over the chart.
- Updates break everything. The moment you update the data, your manual text boxes are misaligned.
- Visual Noise. You spend 20 minutes just trying to remove the gray background and gridlines to get that clean "editorial" look.
The Better Way: Using ExtraChart

5. Insert and Update
