How to Create a Scatter Plot in Google Slides to Visualize Correlations

We’ve all been there. You have two sets of data—say, "Marketing Spend" and "New Leads"—and you know they are related. You want to prove that when one goes up, the other tends to follow.

If you try to shove that data into a standard bar chart, you end up with a cluttered mess that requires five minutes of explanation.

This is exactly where a Scatter Plot shines. It’s the best way to visualize correlation, patterns, and outliers between two numeric variables. But if you’ve ever tried to build one natively in Google Slides, you know the struggle: you have to link out to a Google Sheet, fight with the chart editor in a separate tab, and hope the formatting doesn't break when you update it.

There is a faster, cleaner way to do this directly inside your presentation. In this guide, I’m going to show you how to build a scatter plot in seconds using ExtraChart.

Why Use a Scatter Plot?

Before we get to the clicking, let's look at why you'd choose this chart type. A scatter plot (or X-Y graph) places one variable on the horizontal axis and another on the vertical axis. Each dot represents a single data point.

The Problem with Native Google Slides Charts

Google Slides is great, but its charting engine is essentially a window into Google Sheets. It works, but it breaks your creative flow. You have to leave your slide, open a spreadsheet, manipulate columns, and then jump back to hit "Update."

If you need to change a color or adjust the axis scale? Back to the spreadsheet you go. It’s clumsy, especially when you are trying to iterate quickly before a meeting.

The Better Way: Creating a Scatter Plot with ExtraChart

1. Launch ExtraChart

First, make sure you have the add-on installed. Open your presentation and go to Extensions -> ExtraChart -> Create & Edit Charts.

2. Select the Scatter Plot

3. Enter Your Data

Once you click the icon, the Editor window pops up. This is where the magic happens.

On the Data tab, you can simply paste your data. If you have your X and Y values in Excel or a CSV, just copy them and paste them directly into the ExtraChart grid.

  • Column 1: Usually your Label (e.g., "Month" or "Employee Name").
  • Column 2: Your X-Axis value (e.g., "Ad Spend").
  • Column 3: Your Y-Axis value (e.g., "Revenue").

As soon as you paste the data, the preview on the left updates instantly. You don't have to guess what it will look like.

4. Customize Your Visualization

This is where you can make the chart look professional. A scatter plot can get messy if you have a lot of dots, so styling is crucial.

In the Settings tab, you can:

  • Adjust Dot Size: Make points larger or smaller to improve readability.
  • Color Palettes: Use your brand colors so the chart feels native to your deck.
  • Axis Control: Set min/max values for your axes to zoom in on the relevant cluster of data.
  • Gridlines: distinct gridlines help the audience read the specific values of a dot.

5. Insert and Done

When you are happy with the look, click Create. ExtraChart inserts the visualization as a high-resolution image directly onto your slide.

Need to make a change later? This is my favorite part. You don't need to find the original data file. Just click the chart image on your slide, open ExtraChart again, and it pulls the data back out of the image so you can keep editing right where you left off.

Quick Tips for Better Scatter Plots

  • Don't Overcrowd: If you have thousands of data points, a scatter plot might look like a blob. Consider filtering your data or using a Heat Map (also available in ExtraChart) if density is what matters most.
  • Label Your Axes: Since X and Y are both numbers, your audience will get confused if you don't clearly label what each axis represents in the settings.
  • Highlight Outliers: If you are presenting, use the customization tools to draw attention to the dots that don't fit the pattern. That's usually where the most interesting business insights are hiding.
