How to Create a Pareto Chart in Google Slides to Visualize the 80/20 Rule

You know the drill. You’re looking at your sales data, and it’s obvious: a handful of clients are driving almost all your revenue. Or maybe you’re in product management, staring at a bug report, realizing that fixing just three specific issues would solve 80% of your user complaints.
That’s the Pareto Principle (the 80/20 rule) in action.
The problem? Communicating this visually in Google Slides is a nightmare. A classic Pareto chart—that hybrid beast combining a bar chart for values and a line chart for cumulative percentage—isn't a native option in the Slides menu. To build one, you usually have to wrestle with Google Sheets, hack together a "Combo Chart," fight with secondary axis formatting, and pray it doesn't break when you paste it into your slide.
Today, I’m going to show you a cleaner, faster way to visualize this concept directly inside Google Slides using ExtraChart.
The Philosophy: Do You Really Need the Line?
Before we start clicking buttons, let's look at the chart itself. The classic Pareto has that rising line indicating cumulative percentage. It’s useful for strict statistical analysis, but in a presentation context? It often just adds clutter.
If your goal is to show your stakeholders "These 3 categories matter, the rest are noise," a sorted, high-definition Bar Chart often tells the story better. By sorting your data from highest to lowest impact, the "vital few" naturally dominate the visual hierarchy.
Here is how to build a publication-quality visualization of the 80/20 rule without leaving your presentation.
Step 1: Prepare Your Data
The secret to a good Pareto visualization isn't the chart settings; it's the data sorting.
- Open your data source (Excel or Google Sheets).
- Sort your data in descending order by value.
- Calculate the cumulative percentage if you really need to mention it in your speaker notes, but for the chart, we just need the raw values sorted.
Step 2: Fire Up ExtraChart
If you haven't used ExtraChart yet, it's a sidebar add-on that fixes most of Google Slides' data viz limitations. You open it by going to Extensions -> ExtraChart -> Create & Edit Charts.
Once the sidebar is open, you’ll see the library of 20 chart types. Since we are focusing on comparing the magnitude of categories, we want the standard Bar Chart.

Step 3: Paste and Visualize
Clicking the Bar Chart icon opens the dedicated popup editor. This is my favorite part of the workflow because it separates me from the chaos of my browser tabs.
- Paste your data: Copy your sorted data from your spreadsheet and paste it directly into the "Data" tab of the editor.
- Watch the preview: Because your data is already sorted, you'll instantly see the "Pareto shape"—a steep drop-off from your top contributors to the long tail of trivial many.
Step 4: Style for Impact
This is where the native Google Sheets charts usually let me down. They look... spreadsheet-y. To really sell the 80/20 rule, you need to strip away the noise.
In the Settings tab of ExtraChart:
- Clean the Axes: Remove unnecessary gridlines. If the visual difference between the first and last bar is huge, you might not even need the Y-axis labels.
- Typography: Switch the font to Roboto or Inter to match your professional deck.
- Colors: Use the Color Palette Manager. A pro tip for Pareto charts: Use a bright, bold color for the top 20% of bars (your "vital few") and a muted grey for the remaining 80%. This visual trick instantly communicates the 80/20 insight without needing a secondary axis or a messy line graph.
Step 5: Insert and Update
Click Create, and ExtraChart inserts a high-resolution image onto your slide.
The best part? If your data changes next month, you don't need to delete the image and start over. Just click the chart, re-open ExtraChart, and the add-on retrieves all your data and settings. You just update the numbers and hit save.
Why This Beats the "Combo Chart" Hack
I used to spend 15 minutes setting up dual-axis charts in Sheets every time I needed to show a Pareto distribution. Half the time, the scales wouldn't align, or the legend would float into the middle of the graph.
By using ExtraChart directly in Slides, I get:
- Better Design: The padding, spacing, and font controls are superior to native charts.
- Zero Context Switching: I stay in my presentation flow.
