How to Create a Histogram in Google Slides to Visualize Frequency Distributions

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve sat in a presentation, watching someone try to explain a dataset’s distribution using a standard bar chart. They point at the gaps between the bars and vaguely wave their hands about "trends," but something looks off.

That’s because they’re using a bar chart when they actually need a histogram.

If you rely on Google Slides native charts, you probably know the pain. Slides treats every chart as categorical. It loves "Apples vs. Oranges," but it struggles with "Age Ranges 20-30 vs 30-40." If you want a true histogram—where the bars touch to indicate continuous data—you usually have to build it in Excel or Google Sheets, take a screenshot, and paste it in.

Histogram vs. Bar Chart: What’s the Difference?

Before we build it, let’s clear up the confusion.

  1. Bar Charts compare specific categories (e.g., Sales by Region). The bars have gaps between them because "North" and "South" are distinct entities.
  2. Histograms show the frequency distribution of continuous data (e.g., Number of Customers by Age Group). The bars should touch (gap width = 0) to show that the data flows from one bin to the next without interruption.

Google Slides' native chart tool doesn't give you a "Gap Width" slider. That’s where we get stuck. ExtraChart fixes that.

Step-by-Step: Creating Your Histogram

We aren't going to use a specific "Histogram" button—we are going to engineer one using a Column Chart and professional customization settings.

1. Prepare Your Data Bins

Since we are visualizing frequency, you need to group your data before pasting it. If you have raw data, quickly group it into "bins" and "counts."

  • Bin (X-Axis): 0-10, 11-20, 21-30
  • Frequency (Y-Axis): 5, 12, 8

2. Launch ExtraChart

The sidebar will open with a grid of chart types. Since a histogram is vertical, select the standard Bar Chart (specifically the vertical Column style) from the list.

The editor popup will appear. On the Data tab, paste your Bins and Frequencies.

  • Header Row: "Score Range", "Count"
  • Rows: Your data points.

As soon as you paste, the preview on the left updates. Right now, it looks like a regular bar chart with gaps.

4. The Magic Move: Adjusting Spacing

This is the step that native Google Slides can't do well.

Switch to the Settings tab in the ExtraChart editor. Look for the Layout or Spacing section.

  • Find the setting for Inner Padding or Bar Spacing.
  • Slide it down to 0% (or very close to it).

Instantly, the bars expand to touch each other. Visually, you have transformed categorical data into a continuous distribution flow. You can also add a thin white border around the bars in the Colors section to define the edges clearly, making the chart easier to read.

5. Final Polish

Since this is for a presentation, you want it to pop.

  • Axes: clearly label your Y-axis as "Frequency" or "Count".
  • Typography: Use the font picker to match your slide deck’s theme (e.g., Roboto or Inter).
  • Insert: Click "Create".

The chart is inserted as a high-resolution image. The best part? If you need to update the data next month, just select the chart, open ExtraChart again, and the specific settings (including that 0% gap width) are remembered.

Why Not Just Use a Box Plot?

Sometimes a histogram is too granular. If you are trying to show statistical distribution but a histogram looks too messy, you might actually need a Box Plot (or Box-and-Whisker plot).

A Box Plot summarizes distribution using quartiles, which is great for comparing multiple datasets side-by-side. Native Google Slides definitely doesn't have this, but ExtraChart does.
