How to Create a Gantt Chart in Google Slides for Project Timelines (Using Stacked Bars)

Let’s be honest: project managers have a love-hate relationship with Google Slides. We love it because it’s where stakeholders actually look at our work. We hate it because trying to build a Gantt chart inside a slide usually involves drawing twenty different rectangles, trying to eyeball the alignment, and praying the dates don't change.
If a deadline shifts by three days, you’re stuck dragging shapes around like a game of Tetris gone wrong.
But there is a better way. You don’t need to screenshot MS Project, and you definitely don't need to draw manual shapes. You can build a mathematically accurate, easy-to-update Gantt chart using a Stacked Bar Chart.
It sounds counterintuitive, but with one simple "invisible" trick, a stacked bar chart becomes the perfect project timeline. Here is how I do it using ExtraChart to keep everything inside my presentation workflow.
The Logic: How a Bar Becomes a Timeline
Standard bar charts start at zero. Gantt charts, however, start at a specific date.
To bridge this gap, we use a Stacked Bar Chart with two segments:
- The "Buffer" (Start Date): This represents the time from the project start until the task begins.
- The "Task" (Duration): This is the actual length of the task.
The magic happens when you make the "Buffer" segment transparent. Visually, the bar looks like it’s floating in the middle of the chart—exactly like a Gantt bar.
Step-by-Step: Building the Chart
Instead of wrestling with the native Google Slides chart editor (which forces you to open a separate Google Sheet and toggle back and forth), I use ExtraChart. It lets me paste data and tweak settings in a sidebar right next to my slide.
1. Select the Right Chart Type
Open ExtraChart from your Extensions menu. You’ll see the gallery of chart types. We aren't looking for a "Gantt" icon here; we need the Stacked Bar Chart.

2. Prepare Your Data
In the Data tab of the ExtraChart popup, you need to structure your data specifically for this hack. You can copy-paste this directly from Excel or Sheets.
You need three columns:
- Column A (Labels): Your Task Names (e.g., "Planning," "Design," "Development").
- Column B (Series 1): The "Start Day" (e.g., Day 0, Day 5, Day 12). Note: If you are using dates, convert them to "Days from Start" integers for the cleanest look.
- Column C (Series 2): The "Duration" (e.g., 5 days, 10 days).
3. The "Invisible" Trick
Once your data is in, you'll see a standard stacked bar chart. Both segments will be colored. Now we apply the hack:
- Go to the Settings tab.
- Find the color settings for Series 1 (your Start Day/Buffer data).
- Change the color to "None" or match it exactly to your slide background (usually white).
Suddenly, your stacked bars look like floating tasks. The first series pushes the second series into the correct position on the timeline, but because it's invisible, the audience only sees the task duration.
4. Clean Up the Visuals
Now that the structure is there, make it look professional:
- Remove the Legend: Since one series is invisible, a legend usually just confuses people. Turn it off in the Settings tab.
- Adjust Labels: If your x-axis shows numbers (0, 10, 20), you might want to add a text box overlay on the slide later to indicate specific months or weeks, or adjust the axis settings in ExtraChart to show specific intervals.
- Padding: Tighten the gap between bars to make it look more like a solid project plan and less like a statistical graph.
Why Use ExtraChart for This?
You can do this with native Google Slides charts, but it’s painful. Every time you need to move a date, you have to wait for the embedded Google Sheet to load.
With ExtraChart, the workflow is fluid:
- Click the chart on your slide.
- Open the add-on.
- Change "Duration" from 5 to 8 in the grid.
- Click Update.
The chart redraws instantly. No context switching, no "Link to Spreadsheet" errors, and the output is a crisp, high-resolution image that doesn't get pixelated when you present on a 4K screen.

Project timelines change. Your method for drawing them should be able to handle that change without ruining your evening.
