How to Create a Box and Whisker Plot in Google Slides (No Excel Needed)

You’ve probably heard the old statistics joke: if Bill Gates walks into a dive bar, on average, everyone inside is suddenly a billionaire.

That’s the problem with averages. They lie. Or at least, they hide the interesting stuff.

If you are presenting data about salaries, test scores, or product performance, a simple bar chart often misses the point. You need to show the range—the spread of the data, where the bulk of the values sit, and those pesky outliers. You need a Box and Whisker Plot.

Here’s the bad news: Google Slides doesn't have a native Box and Whisker plot. If you look through the "Insert Chart" menu, you’ll find pies, lines, and bars, but nothing for statistical distribution.

Usually, this means building the chart in Excel, taking a screenshot, and pasting it in. But the second your data changes, you have to start the whole process over.

I’m going to show you a better way to do this directly inside your presentation using ExtraChart.

Why Use a Box and Whisker Plot?

Before we build it, let's quickly cover why you’d bother. A Box Plot (or Box and Whisker) splits your data into quartiles. It gives your audience five key pieces of information at a glance:

  1. Minimum: The lowest data point (excluding outliers).
  2. First Quartile (Q1): The middle number between the smallest number and the median.
  3. Median: The exact middle of the dataset.
  4. Third Quartile (Q3): The middle value between the median and the highest value.
  5. Maximum: The largest data point.

This is incredibly powerful for comparing groups. For example, comparing the performance of two sales teams. Team A might have a higher average, but Team B might have a tighter consistency (smaller box). You can’t see that in a column chart.

How to Build It (Without Leaving Slides)

Since Google won’t give us this chart natively, we use ExtraChart to extend the platform's capabilities. It’s a sidebar add-on that lets you build complex visualizations without toggling between browser tabs.

1. Launch the Add-on

First, make sure you have ExtraChart installed. Once you’re in your slide deck:

  1. Go to Extensions in the top menu.
  2. Hover over ExtraChart.
  3. Click Create & Edit Charts.

The sidebar will pop up on the right.

2. Select the Box Plot

You’ll see a list of over 20 chart types that Google Slides usually leaves out. Scroll down to the statistical section or look for the icon that resembles a vertical rectangle with lines extending from the top and bottom.

Click the icon to open the editor.

3. Enter Your Data

This is where ExtraChart shines compared to hacking a "Candlestick" chart in Sheets. The editor gives you a clean spreadsheet-like interface.

You can input your statistical summaries directly. If you have your Five-Number Summary ready (Min, Q1, Median, Q3, Max), you just paste them into the cells.

The preview on the left updates instantly. No guessing, no "Apply" buttons. You see exactly what the box looks like as you type.

4. Style It Up

Statistical charts can look dry, but they don't have to. In the Settings tab, you can customize the look to match your brand:

  • Colors: Change the fill color of the boxes to match your slide theme.
  • Axes: Adjust the scale if you need to zoom in on a specific range.
  • Typography: Change the font to Roboto or Inter so it doesn't look like a generic Excel clip-art.

5. Insert and Present

Click Create, and the add-on renders a high-resolution image directly onto your slide.

Here is the best part: It’s not a static screenshot.

Let's say a week later, your quarterly numbers change. Instead of rebuilding the chart from scratch, you just click the chart image on your slide, open ExtraChart again, and the add-on pulls the data back out of the image. You update the numbers, click update, and you’re done.

Comparison is Key

Box plots are rarely used in isolation. The real value comes when you put two or three next to each other.

Imagine showing "Customer Wait Times" for three different store locations.

  • Store A: Short box, short whiskers (Consistent).
  • Store B: Long box, long whiskers (Unpredictable).
  • Store C: Short box, but huge upper whisker (Mostly fast, but occasional disasters).

Visualizing this distribution helps stakeholders make decisions that averages would obscure.

Final Thoughts

You shouldn't have to be a data scientist—or an Excel wizard—to visualize distribution in a presentation. By using ExtraChart, you keep your workflow simple, your data editable, and your slides looking professional.
