How to Build a Sales Leaderboard in Google Slides Using a Horizontal Bar Chart
April 5, 2026
Let’s be honest. Most weekly sales syncs are a little dry.
You pull up a slide, stare at a dense spreadsheet of numbers, someone reads off the top performers, and everyone nods politely. It works, but it doesn't exactly get the adrenaline pumping.
Sales teams thrive on recognition and healthy competition. If you really want to light a fire under your reps, you need to visualize their success. A leaderboard is the perfect tool for this, and the absolute best way to format a leaderboard is with a horizontal bar chart.
Here's exactly why this specific chart works, and how you can build a stunning, easily updatable version directly inside Google Slides.
Why a Horizontal Bar Chart?
If you've ever tried to build a leaderboard using a standard vertical column chart, you already know the pain.
People's names are long. When you put them on the X-axis of a vertical chart, the text either gets squished into illegibility, rotated at a frustrating 45-degree angle, or cut off completely.
A horizontal bar chart solves this instantly.
- Readability: Names sit neatly on the Y-axis, reading naturally from left to right.
- Visual Hierarchy: It naturally mimics a ranking system. You put your top performer at the top, and the bars extend out like runners in a race.
- Space Efficiency: It makes excellent use of the widescreen 16:9 layout of a standard Google Slide.
The Problem with the Native Google Slides Workflow
Normally, building this means leaving your presentation. You open a new tab, go into Google Sheets, paste your CRM data, build the chart, mess with the formatting for 20 minutes, and finally copy-paste it over to your slide.
It’s tedious. Worse, what happens next Friday when you need to update the numbers for the new weekly meeting? You have to go find that original spreadsheet, update the data, and hope the formatting doesn't break when it syncs.
We built ExtraChart to fix exactly this workflow. It lets you create, customize, and—crucially—update professional charts without ever leaving your presentation.
Step-by-Step: Building Your Leaderboard
Ready to build something your team will actually want to look at? Here is how to do it in just a few minutes.
1. Launch ExtraChart
If you haven't already, grab ExtraChart from the Google Workspace Marketplace.
Open your slide deck, click Extensions > ExtraChart > Create & Edit Charts. The add-on will open right there in a sidebar, keeping you focused on your presentation.
2. Pick the Horizontal Bar Chart
You'll see a categorized list of 20 different professional chart types. Scroll down to the Bar & Column Charts section and click the Horizontal Bar Chart icon.

3. Drop in Your Data
Clicking the icon opens the ExtraChart popup editor. You don't need to mess with separate spreadsheet files.
Just click over to the Data tab. You'll see a simple, lightweight grid. Copy your reps' names and their total revenue (or meetings booked, or deals closed) straight from your CRM or an Excel file, and paste it directly into the cells.
The preview on the left will update instantly. Make sure you sort your data from highest to lowest so the top performer sits proudly at the top of the chart!
4. Make It Look Professional
Now click the Settings tab. This is where you make it look like a customized graphic rather than a boring default chart.
- Colors: Use the Color Palette Manager to match your company branding. You can even highlight your #1 rep in a bright brand color, and use a muted gray for the rest of the team to make the winner pop.
- Typography: Swap the default fonts to something clean like Inter or Roboto. Make the names large enough to read from the back of the room.
- Clean it up: Turn off the gridlines. You don't need them. Add data labels to the ends of the bars so everyone knows exactly how much revenue was closed.
5. Insert and Update
Click "Create." ExtraChart generates a crisp, high-resolution image and drops it perfectly onto your slide.
Here is the best part: Next week, when you need to update the leaderboard, you don't have to start over. Just click the chart image on your slide, open ExtraChart, and it pulls up your exact data and settings. Change the numbers, hit update, and you're done in 30 seconds.
Start Celebrating Your Wins
Visualizing success shouldn't be a chore that eats up your Friday afternoons. By using a horizontal bar chart, you give your sales team the recognition they deserve in a format that's actually easy to read.
Stop fighting with clunky native tools. Add ExtraChart to your workflow and start building leaderboards that actually look like they belong in a professional deck.
