Fluid Data: How to Create a Stream Graph in Google Slides

Have you ever looked at a standard stacked area chart and felt it looked a bit too... blocky?

Sometimes data doesn't move in sharp, angular lines. Sometimes it flows. Think about music genre popularity over the last 40 years, or how a hashtag trends on social media. It starts small, swells up, and then tapers off. It’s organic.

That is exactly where a Stream Graph shines. It takes your data and visualizes it like a flowing river, displacing it around a central axis rather than stacking it from the bottom up. It’s aesthetically stunning and instantly communicates "change over time."

The problem? Google Slides doesn't support them natively. If you go to Insert > Chart, you’ll see columns, pies, and lines, but nothing that looks like a stream.

Usually, this means you have to build the chart in Tableau or Illustrator, export it as a static PNG, and paste it onto your slide. If the data changes, you have to start all over again.

I hate that workflow. It breaks my focus.

That’s why we included the Stream Graph in ExtraChart. You can build one right inside your presentation, keep the data live, and edit it whenever you want. Here is how to do it.

When Should You Use a Stream Graph?

Before we build one, let's make sure it’s the right tool for your slide. Stream Graphs are specialized.

Use them when:

  • You want to show volume changes over time across multiple categories.
  • The trend is more important than exact values (it’s hard to read specific numbers on a stream graph).
  • You want to visualize seasonality or "organic" shifts (e.g., website traffic sources throughout the day).

Avoid them when:

  • You need precise comparisons between categories.
  • You have negative values (it creates a mess).
  • You have more than 10 categories (it turns into spaghetti).

Step-by-Step: Building the Graph

Assuming you have ExtraChart installed (if not, grab it from the Google Workspace Marketplace), here is how you create that flowing river visualization.

1. Open the Sidebar and Select the Chart

Launch ExtraChart from your Extensions menu. You’ll see the grid of 20 chart types.

Scroll down to the "Advanced Visualization" section. You are looking for the icon that looks like waves.

2. Input Your Trend Data

Once you click the icon, the editor window pops up.

A Stream Graph requires a specific data structure:

  • Column A (X-Axis): Usually Time (Dates, Years, or Quarters).
  • Header Row: Your categories (e.g., "Rock," "Pop," "Jazz").
  • Cells: The values for each category at that time.

You can paste data directly from Excel or Google Sheets here. As soon as you paste, the preview on the left will update. You'll immediately see that "river" shape form.

3. Adjust the "Wiggle"

This is my favorite setting. In the Settings tab, look for the curve or interpolation options.

Since Stream Graphs are about aesthetics, you want smooth transitions. ExtraChart handles the math to smooth out the jagged edges between your data points, making the chart look like liquid rather than a spiky mountain range.

4. Fine-Tune Colors

Because layers sit on top of each other, color choice is critical.

  • Use the Color Palette Manager to pick a theme.
  • I recommend using a gradient palette (shades of blue or distinct contrasting colors) so the viewer can easily distinguish between the streams.

5. Insert and Present

Click Create. The add-on generates a high-resolution image of your Stream Graph and drops it onto your slide.

If you had pasted a screenshot from external software, you’d be opening that software up, finding the file, editing the data, exporting, and re-pasting.
